Best cash back cards

  • AmEx Blue Cash

Rewards: 5% cach back at gas stations, supermarkets, and drugstores; 15% everywhere else.

Drawbacks: You have to spend $6,500 annually to get 1.5% and 5% back. If you spend less, you’ll get 0.5% and 1% back.

  • Discover More

Rewards: 5% cashback in 4 spending categories on up to $400 of quarterly purchases. 0.25 to 1% on other purchases.

Drawbacks: The categories change 4 times a year.

  • Chase Freedom Visa

Rewards: 3% for every dollar you spend in three categories where you spend the most. 1% on every dollar you spend in another category.

Drawbacks: Categories are based on your spending every month, but 3% rewards are limited to $600 in purchases a month.

Best Gasoline Cards

  • Discover Open Road

Rewards: 5% of on auto maintenance and gas, and 1% on other purchases.

Drawbacks: 5% rebate applies to first $100 in purchases a month and you must spend $3,000 on other purchases annually to earn 1%. If less you get 0.25-0.5%.

  • Shell Platinum Select Mastercard

Rewards: 5% back on Shell gas, 1% cash back elsewhere given as Shel credit.

Drawbacks: $20 annual fee after the first year, waived if you made nine or more Shell purchases in the previous year.

  • Chase PerfectCard MasterCard

Rewards: 6% on gas purchases for the first 3 months/90 days, 3% afterward, and 1% on all other puchases.

Drawbacks: Maximum 3% monthly rebate is $15.
