Networking 16.03.

I was wondering if it is possible to network two computers together on one modem? Eric, you know my specs, it’s my old computer and new one, the modem is a westel wirespeed dual connect modem… I try to get the internet on both simultaneously with one using the ethernet port, the other using usb, but it won’t work; then I tried running the usb from my modem to one computer, and the ethernet simply between the two computers; this layout didn’t work either.

Is it possible to get the internet on two computers using only one modem, a usb cable and ethernet cable? Thanks.

it should work. i have done that a few times using the usb port and the ethernet port on one router. MAy have to go into your options in the router and enable the usb port though. make sure you follow the install directions very closly to the usb part becouse its always the part to give the trouble

;_; I messed something up, lost the internet, but oh well I just formatted my Hard Drive, it was about time for it anyway… I’ve decided not to mess with my internet settings, I always screw something up.

You said router… I don’t think I have a router, I just have that modem that isn’t very user-freindly, if you accidentally bump it it resets on you, and when you open network conections it automatically tries to set up a new “connection”.

;_; I finally know a little about computers, and figures, I get stupid errors on one’s ever even heard of…

Oh so you can do it? How? lol I’m such a n3wb… :(

I tried to set up a network with the windows network conections, but looks like microsoft didn’t spend enough time working on that part of windows xp, it looks like the “wizards” were hastily put together, and based heavily on a lot of assumptions.

Always works fine for me.

No i dont think you can use a modem for a router. I think you need to get an actual router. I’ve tried a few different ways before like having same phone line and 2 modems to using just one and I never could get two computers running on the same modem or the 2 modems with one phone line. so i broke down and bought my a router XD

A modem will always include one port to hook up a computer or aditinal router. However most modems now days include built in routers with at least four ports and sometimes even a wireless raouter all built into the modem. it all depends on the type of modem you have. only the very very cheap modems wont have a built in router but in any modem you can atleast hook one computer to.

here is a way of putting it that is easy for everyone……

If your modem has one ethernet port on the back:
you can connect one computer or one router.

If your modem had one ethernet port and a USB port:
This is like a mini router which lets you hook 2 computers, one ethernet and one usb or one computer(usb) and one router(ethernet).

If your modem has four ethernet ports:
This is an all out modem and router so you can pretty much do anything you want, plus alot of these now days also have built in wireless also that will save you from getting a seperate wireless router also.
