The Titanic
The Titanic became famous for her collision with an Iceberg at 11:40 p.m on April 14, 1912 and the sinking of it at 2:20 a.m on April 15, 1912.Titanic was the largest passenger steamship in the world at the time of her sinking. It was 882 feet 9 inches long; 269 meters. Also it was 92 feet and 6 inches at the beam(28 m). The Titanic could carry 3,547 people including the crew. Since it was a mail ship it got the name RMS(Royal Mail Steamer) Titanic. It was also called SS(Steam Ship) Titanic.
She did exceed the lifeboat standards by having 16 lifeboats, but there still wasnt enough for all passengers. The ironic part of the Titanic’s tragedy is that no single life needed to have been lost if she only had been fitted out with more lifeboats.
The Titanic was very advanced for her time. It held a gymnasium, a pool, Libraries, Cafe’s, and other luxuries. She was alot like her older sister “Olympic” but unlike her she had round lights on A-deck while Olympic had Oval. She was 1,004 gross tons larger than the Olympic. There were also other modifications that the Olympic didn’t have.
Titanic had two sisters called Brittannic and Olympic.(You can learn more about them in Eric’s blog.)
Even though passengers said it broke in two before it sank everyone believed it sank in one piece. In 1985( 73 years after it sank) the wreck was discovered by Jean-Louis Michel, Robert Ballard (and his crew). It was then concluded that it had indeed broken in two before it sank. The two pieces of the ship were found 1,970 feet from each other and facing in opposite directions.
Many people have wanted to raise Titanic, but scientist say that it’s impossible because of two reasons. One is that the ship is 2 1/2 miles underwater. The other reason is that since she’s been underwater so long she’s to fragile to lift without breaking.
Because of extra damage tourist have caused scientist are saying that the hull and structure of the ship may collapse on the ocean floor within the next fifty years.
April 15,2012 will be the 100th anniversary of the Titanic. By then the Titanic Quarter (memorial to celebrate the Titanic and her links with Belfast) should be completed.
Today there are only two living survivors of the Titanic. Barbara West Dainton and Millvina Dean. Barbabra was only 10 months old when the Titanic sank. She now is 96 and lives in Truro, United kingdom. Millvina was the youngest passenger on board. She was only 10 weeks old. Today Millvina is 95 and lives in Southhampton, England.
In 1997 people wanted to know more so they made a movie called “Titanic”. The movie was filmed in Mexico because of the warm temperatures there. The people in the movie weren’t real, but there was someone on the ship with the name J. Dawson. Instead of the J standing for Jack it stood for James.
“Titanic” has made more money than any other movie has, and until this day it is still ranked number one for being the best movie in America.
