Abortions And The Homeless In America

Posted by Eric Hamby in Articles

There are two things I want to cover here today. 1 abortion and the 2nd are the homeless crises. Since one of these is most of the time a cause of the other we will start with the cause, and move to the affect. Let’s start with the definition of abortion. Wikipedia give us this definition.

“An abortion is the removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus from the uterus, resulting in or caused by its death. This can occur spontaneously as a miscarriage, or be artificially induced by chemical, surgical or other means. Commonly, “abortion” refers to an induced procedure at any point during pregnancy; medically, it is defined as miscarriage or induced termination before twenty weeks’ gestation, which is considered nonviable.” – Wikipedia.Com

America alone seems to have the largest problem with the subject as it has been rejected countless times. Today most states will allow abortions in the case of a threat to the woman’s life, rape, incest as well as certain other health reasons. But what about other situations, such as you can’t afford a child or as cruel as it sounds you don’t want it. I see so many children growing up cast out and feeling like no one because their parents didn’t want them. Imagine for a moment that you are in a war and fellow soldier is terribly wounded next to you, how many of you would really let him lay there and suffer. How many would help him with his pain and do what is the only thing that would seem right. But we make people have children everyday just make them grow up alone and in pain because they are unwanted. This also leads to high crime rates, high homeless rates, high child abuse rates, high depression rates, and also high suicide rates. The government says that allowing abortion will demoralize the nation but look at these numbers.

One in five people in a soup kitchen line is a child (America’s Second Harvest, Hunger: The Faces & Facts). In 1999, approximately 12 million American children were hungry or at risk of hunger (United States Department of Agriculture, Household Food Security in the United States). Nearly 1 in 5 children (more than 12 million) in the U.S. live in poverty (U.S. Census Bureau, Current Population Survey). The U.S. child poverty rate is higher than that of most other industrialized nations. In 1999, more than half of all food stamp recipients, 9.3 million people were children (Children’s Defense Fund, Poverty Matters: The Cost of Child Poverty in America).

Is this really what you call saving a child’s life? We doom our children when we make them be brought into this world by parents or single mothers that do not want or them are can’t afford them. Teen pregnancy is at ridicules high in America and why is this. The number one reason is they simply don’t have the parental guidance that they should have. When a 13 or 14 your old child gets pregnant the only people to blame are the parents. It is also disturbing that President Bush says that an abortion is killing a living being. I’m sorry Mr. Bush but where was your since of humanity when you send peoples children to a war in another land that benefits this country in no way. You send them there to die helping another county but when it comes to helping your country you decide to do nothing and keep letting it get weaker and weaker and letting the fabric of this country come apart.

Now I’m going to move in to the 2nd topic which is the homeless crises. Now a lot of this can be solved by the first topic but some of it can’t. Let me talk for a moment about some other issues causing people to become homeless. Research indicates that 40% of homeless men have served in the armed forces, as compared to 34% of the general adult male population (Rosenheck, Robert, Homeless Veterans, in Homelessness in America). Ok this really disturbs me. We have at any point in time at least half of our armed forces just sitting at home and being paid for it but the men and women that have already served this county are homeless because they have no money. In just about every other country you can go the military does all the police work. Why can’t America do this, this would save just about all of the armed forces just sitting here doing nothing not to mention a lot stronger police force. I truly feel sorry for our veterans and the fact they have no support are hardly any and a lot of our armed forces is at home right now watching TV.

National Homeless Estimates: 700,000 per night; 2 million/year. (National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty). Families are the largest and fastest growing segment of the homeless population. New York City officials report a record of 6,252 families with a total of 20, 655 members are lodging nightly in city shelters, with rapid increase. (Use of Shelters by Families Sets Record in City, New York Times; Metropolitan Desk, August 1, 2001). In 2000, requests for emergency food assistance from families with children increased by 16% in American cities over the past year, the highest rate of increase since the recession of 1991 (U.S. Conference of Mayors, Hunger and Homelessness in America’s Cities).

Ok this is about families. We have estimates of 700,000 families homeless each single night. We support other countries more than we do our own. In the last 3 years we have done more to help Iraq and other countries than we have to help the decay of our own. When is the last time you heard our president talk about our homeless families? When is the last time you heard him talk about helping Iraq?

So, what do these numbers mean? It means that America as a whole and America as in each individual person is coming apart. How long do you think we can hold this nation that is tearing itself apart together? We have let this country fall apart while we brag about how great it is. America is a very young county and at this rate we aren’t going to be around another 300 years. America was founded July 4, 1776 and in a little over four generations we have destroyed everything this nation was founded on and brought the nation down to a crawl. Now imagine another 300 years and ask yourself do you really see this country being here that long?

I wish I could bring you into show and tell [considering they even allow that in my classes this year] just to let you rant about politics or what ever the hell goes on in that unpredictable mind of yours.
